Got a bit of a unique setup question here, hoping some electricians might weigh in! So I have an unused 100A meter at my place, and I’m considering running it directly to my Ford Charge Station Pro for the Lightning, bypassing the house breaker box entirely. The charger has an internal GFCI, so I feel like there’s built-in safety there.

The thing is, I live in an area with frequent power outages, and my electrician suggested that, for added safety, it’d be better to install a separate breaker box, a breaker, and a surge protector in between. This would bring the cost up from around $1,500 to install just the charger to $6,500 with the additional equipment.

Just wondering if anyone here has set up their charging station with a direct meter connection or if adding those extra protections would be the wiser call given the unique setup?

Does your meter base include a breaker? I'm surprised your utility permits two meters...and yeah you need overcurrent protection and a disconnect. The extra safety gear could be a smart investment, especially with frequent outages.

I’ve looked into a setup like this. While a direct meter connection can be more straightforward, adding a breaker box and surge protector is often safer, especially with frequent outages. The extra protection might save you in the long run.
