Hey everyone, quick question. Has anyone tried using the J1772 part of a Level 3 charger to charge a vehicle that only supports Level 2?

We’ve got a Level 3 charger installed for our Lightning, but we just picked up a PHEV that only has a Level 2 port. From what I’ve read, the J1772 connector on a Level 3 setup is essentially the same as a standard Level 2 connection, with the extra fast-charging pins added on.

Does anyone know if the top part of the connector can be used by itself to charge a Level 2-only vehicle? I don’t want to risk damaging anything but thought someone here might have tried it or know the technical details.

I’ve tried something similar with my setup, and it worked perfectly fine! The J1772 connector on our Level 3 charger doubles as a Level 2 when needed. Our charger automatically adjusts to the correct power level based on the vehicle. Just make sure your station explicitly supports Level 2 charging through the J1772 plug. No damage risk as long as your PHEV is set up to handle standard Level 2 charging. It’s been a smooth experience for us, hope it works for you too!
